It's been slow going for a few days - not sure why, think I probably shouldn't have given myself a night off when I did. Nonetheless, I seem to still be going and I've written a good amount tonight, so I'll take it as a win!

A REC FOR YOU GUYS:

This fic made me laugh so hard my internal organs hurt. It's completely and utterly ridiculously funny crack - and yet, somehow, still seems in-character? If you would like to read about how Cobb is a registered nurse, Arthur has always secretly wanted to be Robin the Boy Wonder and Yusuf can move things with his mind, read on!

The Adventures of Yusuf, Best Superhero Ever by [livejournal.com profile] jibrailis. Extract: Yusuf had not expected the process that would start with him being bitten by a cat and end up with him becoming a superhero, but to be fair, he hadn't expected Casual Friday either.

...THIS FIC!

Somehow, [livejournal.com profile] deepsix has managed to make Inception's Arthur and 3rd Rock from the Sun's Tommy into the same person. Not only is this crossover hilarious, it is also touching and weirdly believable. Utterly worth reading, if only for the mental image of buttoned-up, all-business Arthur having to introduce Eames to his 'dad', Dick.

if benjamin were an ice cream flavour by [livejournal.com profile] deepsix. Summary: Arthur takes Eames home to meet his family. It goes about as well as could be expected.

tahariel: (Avatar - Aang)

Avatar: The Last Airbender (cartoon version only, I hasten to add) is one of the very few fandoms of mine where my most beloved pairing is in fact the canonical one. Aang and Katara are just so cute together that it fries all my anarchist, anti-conformist braincells into a big pile of squee. And thus, a fic where they are grown up and sexy and fancy each other! Yay!

turnabout by [livejournal.com profile] mekosuchinae. Excerpt: This most recent growth spurt had been very kind to Aang.

OKAY. In an attempt to break free of this slump I am having, I am going to list for you some of my cracky fic ideas!

  • Hawaii Five-O: What if Steve just LEFT HIS HOUSE ALL SHOT UP and every time Danny goes over, he is like 'this place is a wreck!' and Steve just shrugs and says he has lived in worse places, and just walks around the bloodstains and uses the bulletholes to keep things in?

  • Hawaii Five-O: Steve is RoboCop. 'Nuff said.

  • Star Trek XI: New Adventures of Superman AU where Spock is Superman and Kirk is Lois Lane, and they do that whole cheesy thing where they fly above the clouds and have "romantic" conversations (SHUT UP I LOVE THAT STUPID SHOW OKAY)

  • Star Trek XI: Spock cuts his hair an eighth of an inch shorter and is upset when nobody notices, because the cutting of the hair seems to be a really important human ritual and they are EXCLUDING HIM.

THIS IS WHY I NEVER WRITE FIC YOU GUYS IT WOULD ALL BE LIKE THIS.

Whining about the slump I am having today, you don't have to read this part. )

C.S. Lewis never really put a lot of time into what life was like on this side of the wardrobe, and though I love the books dearly in many ways I think that's a shame, when doing so produces something like this fic. [livejournal.com profile] burntcopper keeps each Pevensie perfectly in-character, but projects onto them and into them the way they might grow up, having grown up once already. Well worth reading.

Putting the Natives at Ease by [livejournal.com profile] burntcopper. Extract: Everyone's children came back from the country changed. They were older, for a start. Some of them were wilder, some had no manners, some had been turned into country children with not a trace of London in them, complete with accent. The Tovey twins had come back well-behaved and with a strong work ethic, and wasn't that a surprise, considering the little louts they had been. The Pevensie children, though, came back... odd.

The other day two ideas that had never gone anywhere suddenly snapped together like jigsaw puzzle pieces in an internet game. One of them might be the dragonbird idea. And so possibly I might be developing a new novel project. Watch this space :D

...I really, really need to find that old high school notebook that I suspect has been long since thrown out.

    Today's rec!

Totally awesomely cute and in-character, something that very rarely happens, especially in a fandom like Inception where every character is a badass.

Sort of Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] pyrimidine. Extract: Before today, Eames had this ridiculous idea in his head that Arthur slept standing up, and ‘powered down’ seemed a more appropriate phrase than ‘slept’. This is one of the few times in his life that Eames has enjoyed being wrong and he has no idea why.

Tonight I finished knitting my shawl, for those who are interested! It's maaaaaybe a little bit on the short side, but I can't afford to buy any more wool for it, so. Hopefully my step-mum will like it, anyway! I'm currently halfway through beading the other end of it, but I really have to go to bed now. However! Today's rec awaits!

[livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller's fic always impresses me with the sheer depth and subtle imagination of the writing, and this fic is no different. The delicacy of the worldbuilding - never using exposition, but building the information into the story framework so that we learn without realising it - is the great strength of this White Collar fic. 'Prison magic' - and as far as the story makes us aware, it is only in prison that magic comes - is made both dark and beautiful, and the way it tilts the familiar characters into new shapes while retaining their familiarity is a triumph of prose. Seriously, you won't be disappointed.

Never Leave A Trace by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller. Summary: Neal Caffrey can steal souls. Peter Burke has two shadows. Everything's normal...except when it isn't.

I must have slept on my neck weirdly last night, because it has been soooo stiff and unhappy all day. Hope it feels better tomorrow :(

Today's rec comes to you courtesy of 2006; makes me realise how long I've been maintaining a delicious account for. Now on 1974 recs in 99 fandoms.

Wow, self. You read a looooot of fanfic.

Having talked about our ancient love of The Sentinel last weekend I decided the time was ripe to revisit some of the old fic that I adored so much. Sadly a lot of it seems to be vanishing from the internet as servers go cold and hosts shut down; still, some of it remains, and it was always a fandom with an unusually high quality of fic (especially compared to the show which was, with the best will in the world, mediocre; it was the fandom that made it great.)

The Sentinel is one of those fandoms I recommend diving into even if you never get to see the show (though I may be able to, ahem, hook you up with some if you'd like.) You can pick up most of what you need to know online, and it's so rewarding fanfic-wise that it's totally worth it. Give it a go! This was one of my milestone fandoms and has shaped my fandom - and writing, and creating - experience in ways I am still discovering.

Please bear in mind that I haven't read this story in years, so I am going off my memory of loving this fic. Not only does Lemondrop have a delicate and hauntingly lyrical style, but she also writes the attachment between two people with so light and yet meaningful a hand that it lingers with you for a long time after you have finished reading. This, as I recall, is one of my favourites.

Cloud Mountain by Lemondrop. Extract: There were ten acres of apple orchards on Cloud Mountain, all dormant now after the harvest and press. They strolled through an old orchard, the trees gnarled and twisted, and then through a much younger one. Most of the leaves had fallen, and the ground was mounded with drifts of crunchy yellow leaves. Jim sorted through them until he found the perfect apple leaf and tucked it in his breast pocket, then searched until he found another for Blair, who took it solemnly.

They located the double wooden doors to the cellar and pulled them open to find half-gallon jugs of cider. Jim sniffed one cautiously; not hard, he assured Blair, and they carried two back to the house. The cider was icy cold and very sweet. Its flavor brought back memories of childhood to Jim: his mom getting apple cider for Jim and his friends while they played basketball in the driveway. An after-school drink for Stevie. Halloween. He didn't ask Blair what it reminded him of.

This weekend I have had a lovely time at [livejournal.com profile] zoeiona's Merlin-watching party at her flat in London, along with the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] wickednotevil, [livejournal.com profile] freedomdarkness, [livejournal.com profile] krazykipper, [livejournal.com profile] multiclassgeek, [livejournal.com profile] burkesl17, [livejournal.com profile] cienna, [livejournal.com profile] takadainmate, [livejournal.com profile] gnine, [livejournal.com profile] evalangui, [livejournal.com profile] nyargles and of course [livejournal.com profile] zoeiona! (There were other people there too whose lj usernames I don't know - please tell me and/or add me as required! And obviously if I've forgotten anyone please feel free to chastise me roundly!)

Much ridiculous spouting of terrible badfic was had, along with wonderful food, about a bajillion Curly Wurlys (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] freedomdarkness, whose teeth have the great misfortune of working in a sweet shop) and some real-life witch hunting, in which to be too keen was also an indication of being a witch, apparently.

I come bearing gifts: today's fic rec!

The characterisation in this fic, while humorous, is also so believable that it makes it even funnier; the childishness in how big, bad Steve behaves compared to Danny's relative maturity and patience (well, for Danny) really gives this fic a sense of the sublime in the absurd. Not only does it have a wonderful emotional weight to the relationship between the two of them, but it does so without compromising the hilarity of Steve refusing to play mini golf if he doesn't get to win.

Just Like the Saturday Morning PBS Kids Lineup by [livejournal.com profile] moonythestrals. Summary: The speed of Steve McGarrett's age regression as a function of time exposed to Danny Williams, chart to follow. Plot is tenuous, snark is aplenty.

I've been off work this week which has been lovely. Not only have I had lots of sleep but I have avoided being responsible and grown-up and done a lot of watching TV shows and read books.

This one book in particular you will be interested in, my loves, and I know you will be interested in it because it is called 'The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty: The Erotic Adventures of Sleeping Beauty' and is all about how Prince Charming finds her asleep in her castle, has sex with her unconscious (virgin) body to wake her up then takes her as his BDSM love slave back to his castle where lots of princes and princesses are kept constantly naked as BDSM love slaves and tormented, because apparently this makes you a better ruler. How this works is yet to be explained.

It's one of those books that: a) has to be read to be believed and b) you keep reading even though it seems Anne Rice is really, really into spanking.

    Like REALLY. )

I am so tempted to buy volume two you have no idea, mostly because I am a bit sick in the head.

In other news, I am going to try to restart doing a rec for you guys every day, if people would be into that? Here's the first of them anyway!

For those who love witty banter and crazy hijinks and dragons, this fic is for you! A fantastic fusion of Generation Kill with [livejournal.com profile] naominovik's Temeraire series, focussing on Ray and Brad. You don't have to have seen GK to read this fic, or in fact have read Temeraire, though as both are awesome you totally should. Really this fic's main strength is the wonderful characterisation of Ray, who has such potential to be irritating but is instead terribly endearing; also the skill with which the prose is written and the description used is so on-period for the Napoleonic era despite using characters who are quintessentially modern in their outlooks and syntax. Seriously, this is good. Read it!

I wish there was a way to register myself with spammers as a female-type person and thus avoid having to hear all about how they can make my giant penis a hit with the ladies.

I mean, I have a total girl-crush on Bridget Regan from Legend of the Seeker, but then, who doesn't?

In other news, some of my DVDs are surprisingly valuable, relatively speaking, on Amazon Marketplace. Others not so much. And one book I've sold I have since realised that, due to the fees and cost of postage, I will be taking a small loss on. Dang. But in theory I should be able to streamline my DVD collection, free up shelf space and - ahem - fill it again.

This evening I'm driving down to [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie's house for an evening of pretty, pretty men and retardedness. Then next weekend, me, [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie, [livejournal.com profile] seektheinfinite and [livejournal.com profile] thisissirius are going to see The Secrets of Sherlock Holmes in theatre in London, which I am totally excited about! Followed by on either Saturday or Sunday chillin' with [livejournal.com profile] krazykipper in Oxford. Busy busy busy 0-0

I guess I'd better do a rec, huh? BTW, is anyone reading these now I've started again? I hope so, but I haven't heard anything either way.

Wow. I read a lot of fic this evening. Maybe it's my spiffy new glasses (well, lenses) making the world all sharp again. No wonder I was getting frustrated - my sphere (the basic refractive error) had gone down but my cyl (astigmatic error) had increased, making the fine details a bit smear-y looking. Nothing I'd be able to identify without knowing, but enough to drive me batty.

One-hour service at optical express, though? Not so one-hour. Add another 50% on top of me sitting around in there waiting. Also the guy kept trying to tell me that I really should have the pupil distance set to my proper pd (my last optician found out I'd been wearing glasses set 6mm wrong for years and years and never noticed, so left them as they were since it seemed fine) and that it might induce a squint, despite the fact that I'd already told him I was an orthoptist. Um, I think of the two of us, I'm the one who would notice me starting to squint first, mate. Also, I'm exophoric, and the decentration of my lenses will only help with that rather than exacerbating it. I really wanted either to smack him or to say 'There there, dear. Stop worrying the fluff in your brain and accept that I know what I'm talking about.'

And now for something interesting to those in non-optical professions!

I never thought anyone could write perfectly in-voice Psych fic until I read this. And then gobbled up everything else she'd written in the fandom in quick succession.

The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself by [livejournal.com profile] nixa_jane. Summary: The bad news is that one of Lassiter's highest profile arrests has just escaped from prison. The worse news is that his best hope of tracking him down is a sleep-deprived Shawn Spencer.

I believe the review I just left for this fic went something like "GUH. UM. I THINK. BRAIN BROKEN? SOMETHING? My occipital lobe feels all tingly."

This fic is so outrageously hot that my brain didn't work properly for about five minutes after I read it, and I still feel a little... odd right now.

Consider this one of my Not-So-Daily Recs.

Hotter Than Tales of Crack Peddlin' by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. Extract: It's not the fancy dinner over which Eames had planned to seduce Arthur. Not that Arthur knew Eames was planning to seduce him, but facts are so unimportant in the long run. Or the short run.

I'm planning a longer post about my thoughts on Inception, but some friends have invited me to see it for a second time with them tonight, so I'll hold fire until I've rewatched it. Or until the tingling stops.

So today I went to a fannish meet-up at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street in London, where I met [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock, [livejournal.com profile] mklutz, [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope among other lovely people whose lj names I do not yet know but hope they will add me soon so I can add them back :) It was a really fun afternoon/evening but it was soooo hot. However, I was wearing my brand new skinny dungarees, so this made everything better.

DON'T YOU LAUGH AT MY DUNGAREES, THIS IS HOW I RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, OKAY? EVERYONE KNOWS DUNGAREES ARE TOTALLY RAGEY. Ahem. (I think maybe I need a 'fashion' icon, huh.)

I should totally be writing right now, and my brain is telling me to write, but my hand does not seem to want to open the file. DAMN YOU, HAND. Oh well. Tomorrow? Amy vs Procrastination: 0 - 1000.

On that subject, a tiny complaint against the world: according to lj I have 73 friends, but nobody even commented on the bit of story I posted asking for feedback? I know not everyone checks their journals regularly / has time / etc, but - nobody? I wasn't asking for long intensive concrit, just some reassurance that it doesn't totally suck and I should give up writing. ([livejournal.com profile] inmemorybound, this does not apply to you, as I know you are reading it atm. The same goes for [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie, who has read it before.)

A rec, then, since I'm here! Extra-specially for [livejournal.com profile] inmemorybound, as I know she has been reading in this fandom (against her will) this week!

Avengers fandom is one I stumbled into by accident (as often seems to happen to me) while on my way through Iron Man, having fallen in love with the 'verse through the magic that is RDJ. It meant I had to pick up on something like sixty years of history pretty fast, but honestly, it took less effort than you might expect - and, as always, comic fandoms mean pretty much anything goes, which gives a lot of possibilities for fic. This particular story I love mostly because of the bonding element - I'll admit, I love me a good bonding!cliche - but also because of the reluctance on Tony's part, and the way Steve has to persuade him to open up.

A Meeting of Minds by [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills. Summary: As it turns out, the Extremis hadn't quite finished rewriting Tony's brain. The only potential fix has... consequences.

It is possible I recently watched The Fast and the Furious for the first time. Then all the sequels. Then made [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie watch them all with me again in a marathon, at which I had her trapped and unable to run away due to the unfortunate state of her foot.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post last week, and sorry it took so long for me to respond. It was a really horrible day in the long, ongoing saga that is my work situation - too long to go into in detail here and now, though I think many of you know about it already. We'll have to see what happens, as ever, but things are not as bad this week. I'm feeling better, anyway.

Though today I found out at the gym that I have lost a stone and a half since this January, and let's just say my gym visits haven't exactly been religious, so I know where that's all gone. Stress as a slimming aid?

On a happier note, I've started writing again! Or at least, I've written about 350 words two days in a row now, which is better than the nada it's been up until now! In celebration of this, a wordcounter and a rec for you all! I'm sorry I haven't been doing the recs up until now, btw, but things at work... well. You know.

My old word counter from Zokutou seems to be all gone - poop! I loved that wordcounter! - but this is an acceptable substitute :) A lot of this is from previous work, though, so only the last six hundred or so words are fresh.

    And the rec:

What if Bella realised the power she has over Edward, and used it? This vision of Twilight, even if you hate the original, is mouth-wateringly dark, with Bella portrayed as a sociopath who knows exactly how best to use a vampire who is utterly devoted to her. And All the World Beneath by [livejournal.com profile] seperis. Summary: Dean remembers Texas as blackland stretching in marker-thick strips of vivid brown and black, broken with the sprawling metroplexes of Dallas and San Antonio and Houston; farms spread with the yellow tops of maize waving in pre-autumn winds, threshers moving complacently through the fields with drowsy men in hats waving at the road. He remembers green and gold fields dotted with cows, half-year calves running on the outskirts of the herds. He remembers these were what he saw between jobs, lives being lived that had nothing to do with creeping twilight and sleeping only behind salt circles and ritual wards.
