Can I get a canalboat!AU in the hizzouse?
tahariel: (Night and Day)
Only two out of eleven of you who responded to my last post said that you read crossovers, and only three said fusions. I am outraged! Horrified and hurt!

As you may know, or may have guessed from my reccing habits, I ADORE crossovers. Therefore, I am disowning you all. (Except for [livejournal.com profile] wickednotevil, [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie, [livejournal.com profile] leupagus and [livejournal.com profile] zoeiona. I will let you live.)

Now, believe you me, there are a lot of bad crossovers out there. I especially hate ones where the author's two favourite slash couples meet and everyone is gay. This is not because I hate either pairing, but because I tend to find it awkward and unlikely that they would all be sleeping with what you might call unexpected partners; it's an extension of my hatred of 'everyone's gay!' fic in general.

HOWEVER! A good crossover is an absolute joy, one where characters meet and interact who wouldn't necessarily do so otherwise, and you get to see the way the two universes can be slotted together. Put it this way - I have 141 crossovers bookmarked on my delicious. Which is why today I'm going to rec you some crossovers, regardless of whether you like crossovers or not! Take that!

(I swear tomorrow I will rec you something you have actually said you like.)

Jim Kirk meets John Sheppard! Two slutty space captains in one place!

What if Bones was the seventh cylon?

Downloaded by [livejournal.com profile] ennyousai_fic. Extract: When he opens his eyes he feels steadier. He remembers now what happened. They'd been on Capella IV only to discover the Klingons were already there, and he'd stepped forward without thinking to pull Jim out of the way and -

"You're lucky you were in range of the Resurrection Ship," says the woman on his right softly, and he sees that she is tall and blond and beautiful. "Just a little further out and we wouldn't have been able to download your consciousness."

Arthur is Batman! And Merlin is... his gardener?

The Dark Knight by [livejournal.com profile] stripedpetunia. Summary: Merlin Emrys lands a job as a gardener for the enigmatic playboy Arthur Pendragon, and discovers that what he gets up to at night is not necessarily drinking with celebrities.

Written pre-CoE, Ianto becomes a Reaper ala Dead Like Me. His specialism? People killed by or because of Jack.

Non Linear by [livejournal.com profile] misswinterhill. Summary: Ianto Jones died on a Monday night at exactly six thirty-seven p.m. This wouldn’t have been so remarkable if not for the fact that Ianto Jones was fated to exist for longer than almost any dead man in the known multiverse.

I woke up this morning, turned on my laptop, and the first webpage I saw was the BBC coverage of the earthquake in Haiti. How awful! The pictures are enough to make you want to cry - in fact, made me want to jump up and go there, to help. I know that I don't have any useful skills to give them, and that it is irrational of me. But that was my first impulse. If anyone else was looking for a way to help, I've donated money to the relief fund being raised by the British Red Cross - they seem to be one of the most 'useful' places to put it, if you know what I mean. Not preaching, just thought I'd provide a place to go if you wanted one.

Today we got off lightly here in MK snow-wise; persistant but light, and it didn't really stick to the roads, just to the other snow, which is manageable. We still only had about 50% attendance today, but that's a vast improvement on last week. I think people must be getting sick of not doing things, and so are struggling in to the hospital despite the weather. It saved me from going out of my mind with boredom, unlike last week, anyway, so despite the fact that this means I have to do work, I'm actually happy about it! (I know, I'm surprised too.)

Today we have two recs, since I forgot yesterday: today's theme is His Dark Materials fusion-fics. I love this genre, because it provides a unique insight into how a writer perceives a particular character's inner landscape - not only is there the all-important choice of daemon, but the way the character and their daemon interact and what they talk about and don't talk about is so revealing. I would read them all day if I could.

Bullet-pointy list for formatting goodness!

  • Things are finally FINALLY moving with the flat purchase. I've been approved for the mortgage (pending their receiving a piece of paperwork I sent yesterday), and they have authorised the appraisal/survey. Which means that, hopefully, I WILL ACTUALLY MOVE SOMETIME THIS YEAR.

All those who have heard me moaning about this never-ending saga can now breathe a tentative sigh of relief.

  • In fannish news, I am now up-to-date on: White Collar, Criminal Minds, Castle, and Glee. I would have been up-to-date with Supernatural, too, but I seem to be missing eps 505 and 506. Dammit. Of course, since all shows boot up for the second half of the season this month, I will soon be behind again. Eventually I will catch up with everything, I swear. As soon as I get the goddamned internet for reals.

  • I've been reading a lot this week (real books! Made from trees!) and I read this AMAZING YA book (and then the sequel) that you will all love and have to go read NOW NOW NOW. Look, you can even read a sample chapter for free!

It's called The Hunger Games, it's by Suzanne Collins, and it is pure genius. In a post-apocalyptic world, a teenage girl takes her little sister's place in the Hunger Games, reality TV with a difference... as punishment for their rebellion, the people of the twelve districts are forced to send twenty-four teenagers, twelve boys and twelve girls, into an arena where they are forced to kill each other for the amusement of the ruling class, until only one is left standing. Tense, dramatic, painful, and wonderful; I haven't stopped thinking about it since I read it, and I kind of want to get amnesia so I can read it for the first time all over again. The sequel is already available (and I've devoured that too,) and the third and final book of the trilogy comes out this Summer. I think I might die of anticipation.

  • And now for the accumulated daily recs: this week, with a theme of 'superpowered AUs'! (I swear I will post some non-slash soon, too, for variety.)

biconvex by [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit. Extract: Peter could feel a headache threatening to develop in the Caffrey Zone, which was located an inch above his temples, and had been a close acquaintance of throbbing pain during the last seven years. "But you're a shielder," he said, daring Neal to point out that he was stating the obvious. "And a bad one at that."

Of course, he thinks to himself. Of course I can see the future and dream of my as-of-current-arch-enemy fucking me senseless and then meet his alternate-older self on an icy hellhole where he basically left me to die. Of course. Flood by [livejournal.com profile] enjambament. Extract: After Arthur accosts Merlin in the potato storage room, it’s easier for a few days. They can’t help catching each other’s eyes across the hall and pausing, trapped by their own want, but Merlin is more conscious of how close he stands when he serves Arthur at dinner, and Arthur at least stops telling him to go groom his horse like what he actually means to say is please, if you would take off all your clothes.

Had a great day at the Merlin Meet in London yesterday, as ever, and today thought maybe I ought to actually give out links to some of the fics I mentioned to people instead of just dangling them in front of people and taunting them :D

From a World More Full of Weeping by [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte. Turns out I have two fics a bit like this - Susan Pevensie meets The Doctor. Summary: Two people meet who have nothing in common…except a world of loss.

Threads That Are Golden Don't Break Easily by Lady Paperclip. Summary: Susan meets Captain Harkness at various points in her life.

Off My Lawn! by Barrowjane. Kirk and Spock being grumpy old men! Extract: "Jim, I do not see the point of this," Spock said, turning the cane Jim had given him over in his hands. "Neither you or I require assistance in walking."

Intreat Me Not To Leave Thee by C.M. Decarnin. A long, beautiful D/s fic, sadly unfinished, but worth reading anyway - the endpoint is still somewhat satisfying, so not a total cliffhanger. Summary: Kirk gets an ultimatum.
