tahariel: (Typewriter loves you)
It is possible I might have spent most of the day screaming at tumblr while I tried to customise it to fulfil my desires.

I now have two tumblrs - one for creativity and inspiration, and one for fandom. So if you have a tumblr, come follow me! And let me know what yours is so I can follow you!

This Is Noir - a tumblr of inspirational writing, film, pictures, clothing and cooking to get you thinking in full colour

...for the love of fandom - a tumblr for all my fannish love.

Yahoo Trying To Unload Del.icio.us, Not Shut It Down

OMG YES

This has been a day of MAJOR PANIC for my fannishness, so news like this is awesome. And also hilarious - because clearly Yahoo! have NO IDEA what people want and like and need, which is kind of sucky when you're a company that supposedly makes things that people want and like and need in order to make money.

Also, think of poor diigo staffers, who thought they were about to make it super-big with the cave-in of delicious and now everyone will head straight back to the pool from whence we spawned, leaving their servers overloaded with our stuff. Ah, well. I hear fish came out, wandered around on land for a few millenia then went back again, too. Bagsy being the orca, they're totally stylish.
tahariel: (Fish out of water)
Don't you think it's kind of ironic that people are delicious bookmarking posts about delicious shutting? Or is this some kind of stealth campaign?

ETA: Someone has started a petition to ask Yahoo! to make delicious open source. You can go sign it here.

ETA 2: Electric Bugaloo And another one here.
tahariel: (Fury)
Firstly, gqmfkgfkkajkfskanlkasfskagh.

Secondly, though I know I will be burned with hellfire for saying it, the trailer for the US adaptation of Let the Right One In actually looks pretty awesome. I loved Chloe Moretz in Kick-Ass, so I was happily surprised to see her in this. Interesting how in the US version the hair colours are switched - the boy is dark-haired, and the girl is blonde :)

Thirdly, and less chirpily, WTF, fandom? It just seems like there are so many shitstorms being kicked up about all sorts of things at the moment, but I have to say that my opinion of fandom as a group is really being eroded with this sort of bullshit going on. Considering that I have always thought of fandom as being one of the most accepting, friendly, welcoming communities on the face of this big ol' ball of dirt, to find this kind of blind prejudice against people with disabilities really upsets me.

I can't lay claim to being perfect, but I just don't understand how people can do this kind of thing to other human beings. Wow, this makes more effort for me! Guess I won't pick up and move some chairs to make room for a wheelchair.

I pick up and move my clinic chair - or the chair of the patient's friend or relative sits in - more or less every week to allow patients or their family members to stay in their wheelchairs for examinations. It's not a small chair, and it's awkward. But it means that we can do the tests like everyone else and they can get treatment the same as everyone else. This doesn't bother me at all, it's just something that I do. Why does this have to be a problem? Would these same people exclude an elderly person who, likewise, needed assistance to get into and out of a chair? Of course not, because they've been trained to be respectful to their elders. Just not to people with disabilities.

Honestly, do they really think the interpreter - who has been paid to be there - is all that excited about stealing their content with their eyeballs? Oh no, they looked at the vid - which will soon be available for free on the internet anyway - without paying for it! Seriously, I am learning sign language this year, and you do not have time to take part in discussions yourself when you are interpreting at that kind of place.

I am obsessive compulsive. I know this is not a disability, but bear with me here. A couple of months ago I finally told my bosses this, to explain why I was having problems improving - because they made me so anxious that I got caught up in my own anxiety and got what I call 'looped' - unable to move past fear and worry. (I have since managed to derail this, BTW, for the most part. For the most part.) And even though this initially made things better, because they understood me better, it has since, I think, made them think of me differently, and even though they know it isn't usually a problem, they still look at the issue askance as though I am about to go mad.

And my OCD isn't even a visible, adjustment-requiring medical condition. I can't imagine being judged on sight like this.

Major fail. I'm disgusted with fandom all over again.
tahariel: (Cloud for brains)
...that I'd like to be better about posting. I'm really bad at it. So, I thought, 'what am I good at that I can post about?', and the answer is recommending fic. So, the plan: I'm going to try to recommend one fic every day.

I won't necessarily have read it recently - I have a massive back-catalogue of saved links on my delicious. But I will have read it, and think that it's worth recommending.

I'm also hoping to rec something from a different fandom each time - obviously not ad infinitum, but in a week you should only see one fic for any given fandom. At the bottom of the post will be a link to my delicious tag for that fandom.

Do people think this is a good idea? Would you be interested?

[Poll #1483440]

And now, the first rec, completely disregarding whether you answered yes or no!

Swashing, Maybe A Little Buckling by [livejournal.com profile] eldritchhorrors. Summary: Jo had a pretty good idea of what pirates were generally like. Generally. Then she met Captain Jim.

Some very kind people let me know that track 11 of the fanmix I posted yesterday is corrupted, so I've reuploaded the song separately. During the week I have really limited internet access, so reloading the whole mix would have been very, very difficult.

You can find the reuploaded track here, at Sendspace. If it doesn't work, please let me know. I'll also be updating the original post to include this link, and putting notes on the crosspostings.

Argh! Internet, you make me mad sometimes, corrupting my files *double facepalm*

ETA: Some very kind people let me know that track 11 of the original .zip is corrupted. Dang. I've reuploaded the song in question since my internet during the week is a bit iffy, so anyone who wants it, you can find it here. Sorry *double facepalm*

tahariel: (Sylar only wants me for my mind)
Got this link through delicious - a short film made entirely of nearly 15,000 still shots run together to make what is, in effect, a stop motion movie starring Zachary Quinto running around first his home and then the set of Heroes. Not only is it visually clever - the shots are taken close enough together that it's not jerky, but far enough apart that it's obvious it's not true video - but it also really made me giggle. It's awesome, go check it out!

Happy New Year, Bordeaux, starring Zachary Quinto, that hotass GQMF.

I'm the first to admit that I'm not very plugged in to the discussions side of fandom. I'm a lurker by nature and always have been - I came for the fic, and stayed. So when big wanks blow up, I'm usually the last to know, and have to dig around to find out what's been going on.

I like to understand what people are arguing about, and to hear both sides, then make up my own mind about where I fall and what I want to do about it. I did this with the whole Racefail '09 fiasco - read what people said, considered it, and decided to integrate it into my own personal behaviour so that I could be a better person. Not that I'm saying I was particularly racist before - but I grew up in an almost exclusively white area, am middle class and white, and have very little experience of non-white issues. I try to be fair to everyone and treat everyone the same. I want to be the kind of person who does good things for everyone around her, not bad things - I want to leave the world better off when I die, not screw it up more. This includes upsetting people.

So why, when it upsets abuse victims and can trigger horrible mental backlashes, do people talk about warning for triggery topics in fic as though it's a terrible imposition? I'm sorry, I just don't get it. It reads to me as though you're telling the abuse victims it's their own fault, so they should STFU and get out of fandom if they're going to be so whiny about it.

Um, no. That's not how MY fandom works. In fact, that's not how MY LIFE works. I would have thought it wouldn't be the way you wanted your life to work, either.

So. Here is my personal policy on warnings. I'm only just creeping back into writing fanfic again after several years, and who knows - I may end up backing off again into the dark and re-lurking. But I'm not willing to not touch on this issue.

I will always warn for rape/non-con, dubcon, child OR ADULT abuse (sexual/emotional/physical), character death or kinks that may be triggery such as BDSM.

To the best of my ability, the fics I link to on my delicious, which I consider to be a recs page, will always carry warning tags for these issues. If I slip up and forget one, I apologise, and a request for me to tag a fic correctly will always be listened to.

If, like me, you had no background information to this at all, I started here, at queenofhell's journal, and branched out. This post by [livejournal.com profile] impertinence is a candid and straightforward explanation of what triggers are and how they work. Warning: Very explicit discussion of sexual assault and the nature, anatomy, cause & effect of triggers. Is itself triggery.
tahariel: (Star Trek - Kirk in command)
I've been trying to decide what I wanted to say about the new Star Trek movie for almost a week now. This is for two main reasons - one, I have resolved that I should make both more frequent and more meaningful (aka more discussion, less boring) posts , and two, BECAUSE IT IS TOTALLY FRIGGING AWESOME AND IT BLEW MY MIND OMG!!!

Here there be spoilers, aka, you should totally see the film first )

Seriously, just AWESOME. I'm going to go see it again as soon as I have the chance. Anyone want to come?
tahariel: (Dollhouse - if you wish)
I actually posted this to [livejournal.com profile] dollhouse_meta about a week ago, but it doesn't seem to be a very active community. Either that or nobody but me cares about the way they've named the characters :(

Anyway, I thought I'd repost it here on my journal, in the hopes somebody else would find it interesting!

Warning: Spoilers for episodes 1.01 - 1.04

Etymology of Names in <i>Dollhouse</i> )
tahariel: (Robotica)
One exam down, four to go *le sigh*

It was pretty good, all things considering, but my stomach decided to have a stress attack as soon as I sat down so I felt pretty nasty all through it. Better now that I've had a sit down, eaten some choccy biccies and read some fanfic. To which I must say:

OMG GO READ THIS NOW. It's an SGA fic by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge called The Difference Engine, in which John has a robotic brain and Rodney put it there.

Heck, even if you're not into this fandom, this is a work of genius. Go read it anyway.

BTW, it totally made me want to watch Ghost in the Shell again, which you should watch, too, if you haven't seen it :)
tahariel: (Die Hard - McClane/Farrell)
Having fallen head-first into Die Hard fandom (well, who wouldn't after watching the fourth film? It's the only one I've seen, but I now have all four on DVD and will be watching them this week), I'm almost already through every McClane/Farrell fic easily findable, goddammit.

However! A tidbit of good news, once I got off my ass and hit Google to appease my curiosity and hope: it seems they will likely be doing Die Hard 5 after all, and with Justin Long still in it!

(Obviously, if you're interested, if you go check out my del.icio.us which is linked on my lj page, there are now plenty of fic recs there and waiting. 'm just sayin'.)

Totally. Awesome. More McClane/Farrell moments, please!
tahariel: (Fandom Fucks Back)
What if, instead of making do, we could migrate to somewhere worth our while?
tahariel: (Fandom Fucks Back)
I may or may not boycott LJ tomorrow. But considering my recent posting record, I would not expect to be posting tomorrow anyway :D

This post is just to let you all know that I have now backed up my lj as best as I can at insanejournal, same username, and to ask if anyone else also has a journal over there I should friend. I'm not planning a permanent migration or anything, but I thought - with more recent lj-drama - it would be prudent to be ready if I need to be. Tomorrow I'll do some more searching for friends etc over there, today I just set up.

Yay I did some writing today too! So now the wordcount is (drumroll please!):

It's totally going to be over 100k. Hopefully not too much over, though, or I will have to cut loads, and that will be hard. An', an', I don't wanna!

Five minutes before midnight strike deadline! Score!
tahariel: (John/Rodney - heartbroke and waiting)
Even if you're not an SGA fan, you should go read this. It's beautiful, moving, and I cannot pimp it enough.

tahariel: (TV loves you)
Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku are teaming up for another new, awesome-sounding TV show, with seven episodes already paid for.

The problem being? It's on the FOX network. Who as we all know, cancel everything that's any good. So I've joined this new lj community, [livejournal.com profile] save_dollhouse, which has been started so that we can all wait for the inevitable and be already set up to start the campaign when we need it XD

Isn't it hilarious how true it is, that this is going to be needed, and we just go ahead and set up in preparation before they've even started filming?

I was just poking around at grey/blue to see if there was anything about Midnight Blue updating The Mirror of Maybe, when I came across this short biography:

Midnight Blue lives in Brisbane, Australia, and is an accomplished artist, and the author of some of the best fan-fiction ever written.

Now excuse me, but isn't that something you don't actually write about yourself, on a website you own, that's hosting said fanfic? I'm not exactly one to talk about modesty, but really, her and her ego need to get a room.
tahariel: (Cloud Nine)
So I really ought to post more, huh? (Hey, look at the new icon I made - it came out cool, huh? Yes, I am modest as well as talented.)

Not a lot going on, really. I'm just finished my second week of lectures (which I'm enjoying, by the way - learning new things is made. Of. Awesome.) I'm really liking anatomy, because I like knowing the names of all the different fiddly bits of things (we're only doing the skull and orbit, for obvious reasons) and seeing how it all fits together. It's like the best sort of jigsaw puzzle :)

I'm really trying to knuckle down and write again. I'm in that sticky place, and if I make myself I can write, but I'm not just sitting down and doing it at the moment, which is annoying, because I do enjoy it. I really need to break the habit, too, of always starting at about 10:30pm and writing until I wake up the next morning with dark circles. Anyway, drumrolls please:

Ta da!

I can't remember what else I've already told you about, so I'm going to ramble a bit more, okay?

I've joined the Drama Society this year, wanting to do backstage team work, and I've got the exact job I wanted, which rules - I'm stage manager for Midsummer Night's Dream! This means I get to make lists, organise props and stage, and boss people around. So, perfect :D I'm really looking forward to getting going with it. The play is on at the end of November (not that I expect you all to pick up sticks and come and see it - I'm a bit out of your way, mostly, am I right?) I'm doing the graphic design, too, at least for that play and possibly for the three others we're putting on this term (it's a big society!) So I'll let you see the posters when they're done. On top of even that, they're going to be running writing workshops - aimed at screenplays and scriptwriting, but I think it could be really useful anyway. Dialogue and character are important in almost every type of writing, so if I can work at it and improve, that's a good thing!

I'm also going to my first Anime Club meeting this evening. I wasn't sure if I was going to go, because it sounds like Drama could be really busy, but then I met [livejournal.com profile] tellezara on the Orthoptic night out, and it sounds fun and fannish, and I have no fannish friends here, so I'm going to go. Hopefully it will be awesome :)

That's all I can think of for now. I'll post again... some time :D
