tahariel: (Just Like Blood)
So today was really frustrating, but again not because of work shenanigans. It seems I am just in the zone for frustration at the moment. I also made much too much cauliflower cheese, but it turned out awesome, so I will save it for another day.

I am hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] inmemorybound, [livejournal.com profile] sillyshy and [livejournal.com profile] krazykipper at various times over this weekend, so that should make EVERYTHING BETTER. Because that is how the world works.

YES IT IS SHUT UP

Today's rec is an Underworld fic! This movie is one of those things you love even though it is bad for you. It is... not the best movie ever made, put it that way. But I love the premise of it, and I think it's pretty hot, anyway. This fic takes the best of the movie and puts it into fic form, like turning dead stuff into diamonds! Sparkly, sparkly diamonds.

In the Bedroom by Misty Flores. Summary: Despite his change - Michael's still deceptively human.

tahariel: (Sigh!)
So today was a pig of an afternoon at work, but not because of shenanigans, just because it was so busy and then I was supposed to see TWO five o'clock patients myself (I finish at 5:30pm.) Thankfully one didn't show up but I still ended up leaving late, and thus didn't get a chance to look over my notes thoroughly for the afternoon before my boss gets them tomorrow. I had a quick check, but I'm unhappy about not being able to really sit down after clinic and make sure.

That said, a totally awesome rec today!

This fic I stumbled across on delicious (as I so often do) and totally fell in love with. Thoughtcrimes is a great Joe Flanigan movie anyway, but the chemistry between the two main characters and what this means longterm is really explored in this fic without having to cover it all - it's just there, omnipresent and wonderful.

I Love My Love by [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first. Summary: Sometimes, after almost spending almost six years with the same person, day after day, the same weird habits, the same repetitive thoughts – God, sometimes she just wanted to kill him on general principle.

So today was a bitch of a day, but not specifically because of all the stuff that's been happening at work but more because I got one of those Very Special Parents that I like to privately call 'that freaking crazy bitch.' Honestly, this woman. IDEK. Not even worth going into it. My mentor was very nice about it, anyway.

Pretty much would have been a bitch of a day whether or not all this stuff was happening or not, so I guess it's better than it has been?

Tomorrow I'm going to be in London for a study day, after which I'm going to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] cienna, [livejournal.com profile] takadainmate and [livejournal.com profile] gnine to watch old Highlander episodes and rock out. I'm looking forward to it - I'm keeping busy at the moment, and it's nice to have something I'm doing other than being chastised.

Now for a rec! *goes and digs for something you guys will like*

This is just the first fic of a series. Now, I haven't seen BSG, but this fic? Makes me really, really want to. It's soooo good.

Downloaded by [livejournal.com profile] ennyousai_fic. Extract: When he opens his eyes he feels steadier. He remembers now what happened. They'd been on Capella IV only to discover the Klingons were already there, and he'd stepped forward without thinking to pull Jim out of the way and -

tahariel: (TNT - the boundless deep)

Today's rec is a White Collar story that somehow manages to incorporate random outbreaks of zombies casually into the character's worldview, without skipping a beat. Not only does it maintain the witty and endearing interplay between the characters, but it puts them into a slightly different position without feeling like it has done. Now that's skill.

The Zombie Story by [livejournal.com profile] giglet. Summary: In which Peter is a big damn action hero, Elizabeth pwns Brooklyn, and Neal ruins a set of very nice Italian shoes.

tahariel: (LotR - the end of all things)

Today's rec is another of those rare, wonderful finds that you tend to trip over in the dark. They find you, not the other way around. Not only does this story expand on a hitherto untouched area of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, it does so almost entirely independently of the main storyline and with none of the characters really involved. The original characters are all so well-realised that you don't need Frodo or Aragorn or Legolas to carry it. It doesn't hurt that the prose is exquisite, either.

the rest is silence by Merrin. Extract: It’s the quiet he remembers most. The long hours spent looking off at distant Gondor, the silent beacon of Amon Din towering above him. “What do you think of?” Bremand asks him, and it’s the silence he thinks of most.

So apparently Chris Pine is going to be playing the voice of a photon that gets kicked out of the sun or something in a movie called Quantum Quest, and Shatner is also in this movie.

Quantum Quest centers on the story of Dave, a young photon, who is forced out of the Sun on a journey of discovery. He must get to the Cassini Space Craft and save it from the forces of the Void, only Dave does not know exactly what he must do or even where the Cassini Space craft is or what it is. The forces of the Void must destroy Cassini before it sends its great discoveries back to Earth,Dave is the only thing that stands between them and victory.

WTF. I don't even know what to say to that.

Really, CPine? REALLY REALLY?

To be fair, a lot of big names are in this, so it's probably a bit of a coup - Samuel L. Jackson, Hayden Christensen, James Earl Jones, Mark Hamill, Doug Jones...

BUT STILL. A PHOTON, CPINE? A PHOTON? REALLY?

Today's rec is just an outstanding example of the cyberpunk genre, and would be even if it wasn't a Due South AU. [livejournal.com profile] salieri builds a whole new world out of what she has, and does it so completely that you get totally sucked in. Really, really worth reading.

Real Boys (A Chip Off the Old Blog) by [livejournal.com profile] salieri. Extract: "Ah, yes, I see. Well, my--" [The bot] opened a hand and gestured graciously toward Ray and his amusing slang. "--Geppetto is Robert Fraser, Registry number 99994221AlphaFRA2Ab--"

tahariel: (Star Trek - Kirk - golden smile)
I haven't felt much like reccing this past week or so, but as you can read in my previous post, things are improving, so here we go again :)

Today's rec is a truly epic fic. I am talking over 200k words long. It is also TOTALLY ADDICTIVE. Seriously, it's worth reading, but make sure you have time to sit for a while, okay? It is like a healthier kind of cocaine (depending on what you tend to snack on while you read, naturally.)

This fic is Kirk/McCoy, Academy!fic, with a very strong structure and sense of personality coming through from McCoy as POV character. You get a real flavour of his mind reading it, and seeing Jim through his eyes is really well written. While it's not a massive departure from general fandom opinion of Nu!Jim, it's done in such an accomplished manner that it's fair to say it's one of the better examples of the type. It's also a good slow burner of a fic, though as I find often happens with slow burners the burn is better than the payoff. Try it anyway.

Switch by [livejournal.com profile] ceres_libera. Summary: The life and times of Leonard H. McCoy MD/PhD … If Leonard McCoy's life could get any fucking weirder, it would be … Jesus, he didn't even want to think what that could possibly mean, because it's already been too fucking weird to make any kind of rational sense.

So my boss is managing to go to great lengths to find small 'errors' in my clinical judgement every day to make me feel REALLY GOOD ABOUT MYSELF. Wow, I hope my next boss spends as much time on my happiness and wellbeing!

At last weekend's Merlin Meet, I promised [livejournal.com profile] takadainmate some Bruce/Terry old man/young man slash fic recs. So here it is! Batman Beyond is awesome, and you should all watch it if you get a chance, okay? Terry McGuinness is a slightly delinquent teenager who stumbles across the identity - and the gadgetry - of one of Gotham's best-kept secrets - Batman! Bruce Wayne is now an old man, too old to be Batman. But Terry isn't. If you love old-school Batman, this may sound offputting, but it's actually really cool, and they keep Bruce true to his classic personality, not giving Terry any breaks. Somehow, he is still kinda hot, despite being in his seventies of something. DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT.

Read the fic anyway, even if you don't know the fandom! Besides, I may be able to... hook you up, if you know what I'm saying.

Toxicity levels and possible persistent psychological effects by [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn. Extract: A shaking streak of black made its way across the monitor as Terry swiped his fingers over the cowl's cam lens. "You mean besides the bucket of Love. Hhhh. Dumped over my *head*--"

Beyond The Veil by [livejournal.com profile] jamjar. Extract: "You're dead." The look Bruce gives him says, very plainly, 'you're stating the obvious, but I'll forgive you this time. *Only* this time, and if you do it again I'll make you do twelve hours of cold-weather training without the suit.'

tahariel: (Temeraire)
Today's rec is a Temeraire fic that, instead of focussing on the boys (whom I love dearly), instead looks at Jane Roland and her daughter, and the way their masculine lives change the way they act towards each other and the world. It's a thoughtful piece, without being too internal, and really fleshes out that aspect of the Temeraire universe.

Afternoon's Liberty by Penknife. Extract: Captain and not Mama; well, they're in public, so it's best to be discreet. It's possible too that at Emily's age Captain is the more exalted title.

Thank you to everyone who commented on my post about work yesterday. I'm feeling better about it today, even if it still sucks ass, but at least I'm more sanguine about it. I can live with that. I'm just going to do the best job I can do, and fuck them if they don't value that. I am going to be all Tom McRae about it. (I love Tom McRae. I wonder if he has new music out yet? *ponders*)

On other random and unrelated topics!

I don't know about you, but "Child On Board" signs always make me think, well, I guess I won't ram into your car, then, I suppose. Do they really make anyone drive any differently? I'm fairly certain that they're mostly a way of indirectly bragging that you have produced offspring. For proof of this, see "Grandchild on board", a clear extension of this phenomenon which has no value but to show off that your offspring have produced offspring, and you are now old.

In the name of funny roadsigns everywhere:

Today's rec not only ignores either of my read pairings in Star Trek fandom (le gasp!) but is also fabulously funny and poignant. I really enjoy fics that explore the dynamic we saw on screen between Kirk and Uhura, not necessarily romantically but the way in which that is a kind of friendship, too - an ongoing joke between two people who pretend to dislike each other. This is a perfect example of the type.

How Many Roads? or, 27 Times Jim Kirk Hit On Nyota Uhura by [livejournal.com profile] captandeastar. Summary: After the bar fight, Nyota thinks to herself that if this is what being hit on by Jim Kirk leads to, she’s very glad she’s never going to have to see him again.

Since I reread the novel just yesterday, I thought I should rec a Pride and Prejudice fic today! It's sappy but wonderful.

tahariel: (Narnia - Aslan - el rey lion)
This fic... just works. It's such a clever way to fit these two universes together, and the way it's written makes it seem like they were always one and the same, that the author has simply illuminated the place where they meet.

Changeling by The RCK. Extract: Dickon spends his days on the moor. He lets the winds carry his memories away so that he can go home and remember to call it home. He calls Susan Sowerby mother and tries not to let her know that she stands in the shadow of a woman she's never heard of.

tahariel: (Flights of Fancy)
Tonight was the first of the six sessions of my scriptwriting class at the local theatre, and it was ~awesome! We didn't really do any writing tonight, more talking about theatre and how writing works in and fits into this space and method of telling story, but I could tell it was going to be a lot of fun. The guy next to me kinda smelled, though, and was either a) not much of a talker or b) a bit on the dim side, which was a shame, but I will sit somewhere else next time.

I had an idea for a play, or a structure of a play, which I am going to try to start writing now for this class, and in April there is tentatively scheduled in a showcase for some of our work, so with any luck I can put something together for that and they will get Real Actors <™> to perform it! AWESOME. So excited.

Now for today's rec!

I don't know how many of you follow [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock's annual 14 Valentines project, which focuses on promoting women's issues and discussing difficult topics of importance to women? Every year she writes several amazing fics for this, and encourages other people to do so too. This is one of this year's fics, and not only is it a wonderful piece in and of itself, but like many fics in which a character's gender is swapped it also explores what difference that would have made in the character's life and work compared to how they are in canon. Pru is the master of these (SGA's Lustrous, anyone?) and, of course, at building romantic tension. I'll be honest, I've read everything she's ever written that I could get my hands on, whether I knew the fandom or not. So, I give you today's rec:

So: I managed to fix my Firefox. Yay! But somehow my ReadItLater app, which is supposed to sync automatically to an online database, has failed to do so for several months, losing my reading list. Dammit. I don't remember what was on there for the most part, either, which makes it extra frustrating as I try to reconstruct it a little.

On a different note, on the spur of the moment I turned a complete one-eighty and decided to sign up to a beginner's scriptwriting class at the theatre in town which starts this week. When my Dad first suggested it to me I pretty much decided it wasn't for me, but I reconsidered and figured it might be fun, so why not? Wish me luck, you guys - if it's good enough they might perform it at the theatre :)

Rogue and Wolverine are my two favourite characters in the X-men movies, and the difficulty of them getting together only made the idea better. And nobody does it better than [livejournal.com profile] seperis, making it tense and beautiful and hot all at the same time.

So I may have gone and done some flat viewings yesterday. I may have found a really wonderful place that I can afford and has no prior owner so I would be dealing with a company rather than some crazy bitch. I may have made an offer that the agent has assured me will be accepted come Monday. I may already be deciding how I'm going to arrange my furniture, and using the floorplans to estimate what size sofa will fit in the room and where my TV is going to go.

Only two out of eleven of you who responded to my last post said that you read crossovers, and only three said fusions. I am outraged! Horrified and hurt!

As you may know, or may have guessed from my reccing habits, I ADORE crossovers. Therefore, I am disowning you all. (Except for [livejournal.com profile] wickednotevil, [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie, [livejournal.com profile] leupagus and [livejournal.com profile] zoeiona. I will let you live.)

Now, believe you me, there are a lot of bad crossovers out there. I especially hate ones where the author's two favourite slash couples meet and everyone is gay. This is not because I hate either pairing, but because I tend to find it awkward and unlikely that they would all be sleeping with what you might call unexpected partners; it's an extension of my hatred of 'everyone's gay!' fic in general.

HOWEVER! A good crossover is an absolute joy, one where characters meet and interact who wouldn't necessarily do so otherwise, and you get to see the way the two universes can be slotted together. Put it this way - I have 141 crossovers bookmarked on my delicious. Which is why today I'm going to rec you some crossovers, regardless of whether you like crossovers or not! Take that!

(I swear tomorrow I will rec you something you have actually said you like.)

Thank you to everyone who filled in my previous poll! If you didn't, it is NOT TOO LATE *crazy eyes* It's really interesting to get an idea of the spread of things people read, and the most popular fandoms. While I'm still going to post stuff from minority fandoms, it means I also know what you'd like to read and can rec more of that.

Here is a follow-up poll to my previous one, this time concentrating on more generalised things, like genre, cliches and types of AU, as well as het/slash/gen/other.

ExpandYou like that, do you? )
tahariel: (Star Trekkin')
So I ran out of internet today and decided to go look at the hitcounter website I used on my last fic and my fanmix. I haven't looked at them in months, so I was really surprised to find... wait for it...

4014 pageviews for Asymptote, and 921 for my fanmix! Considering that they have 113 and 39 comments on each respectively, and that roughly one third to a half of those will be my replies to comments, that's astounding!

Now, don't get me wrong - I'm really happy just knowing how many people have read it / at least thought about downloading it. I love comments, but having numbers there really fills me with joy. It's interesting as a comparison, though, isn't it? As a statistic of how many people comment versus how many read?

I think I'll go comment on some fic I love right now, actually.

(If anyone is interested, I use Statcounter.com to monitor the number of pageviews. It's free and it's discreet, and it lets me have this gleefulness over my stuff without me having to rely solely on comments.)

Now for the rec!

Clearly very few of you (ie, only [livejournal.com profile] ionaonie) love Superman Returns as much as I do, because she is the only one who caressed its special tickybox on my poll. However! Superman Returns is awesome, and I'm sticking to my guns! Not only does it have Brandon Routh (mmm, Brandon Routh!) and a bullet bouncing off Superman's eye while he smirks hotly, but it is also a really great film for me on an emotional level. There is so much going on under the surface of it, which I really felt tapped into watching it even though that is probably why it didn't do so well at the box office.

Anyway, I'm pairing one of the least popular fandoms from my poll with one of the most - Firefly - in one rec! I'm just that damn good.

I swear, if I don't find out soon which way the seller is going to jump on this property, I am going to track her down and smack her about. For those who don't know, I'm about as close as I can get to being ready to exchange for fucking finally, but now the seller won't let the mortgage company come do the survey or talk to me or even the estate agent. So I'm living in limbo at the moment, fairly convinced she's thinking about pulling out, and seriously, is it too much to ask to be put out of my misery so I can start looking for somewhere else if you're going to nix the deal?

ARGH.

And now: a rec! Eleven people so far have filled out my poll, and the first fandom to jump out at me on the list that has lots of ticks was Avatar: the Last Airbender.

I LOVE THIS SHOW. For something that is, on the outside, a kids' show made by Nickelodeon and shown on Cartoon Network, Avatar is one of the tightest, cleverest, most heart-wrenching and joyful pieces of television - nay, fiction - I have ever come across. I am a picky person. I rewrite lines in published books in my head as I read them sometimes, if I think the scansion is wrong. And there is absolutely nothing I would change in Avatar.

Seriously. If you haven't seen it, beg steal or borrow a copy. I may - ahem - be able to hook you up. Just sayin'.

Signs That Can't Be Learned by [livejournal.com profile] artemisrae. Summary: There’s a fine line between the duties of the Avatar and the duties of a family man. Sometimes Katara can’t help but wonder where Aang’s allegiance lays.
