tahariel: (not obsessive)
Woke up yesterday with a sudden yen to watch Mulan again. It's my favourite Disney movie by far - not only does it have great songs (even among a complete canon of wonderful Disney songs) but the 'princess' is independent, strong and defeats the enemy pretty much single-handedly, while making the 'prince' fall in love with her. Plus for an animated character Shang is pretty hot, but that might just be me :D

Anyway, I've since 'acquired' Mulan 2, and though I suspect it's going to be dire I'm kinda excited about watching it, you guys!

ON AN UNRELATED NOTE, Elijah Wood is going to be reprising his role as Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit! It's likely to be part of a framing story in which the story of the film is being told to him, and allowing them to connect the two more strongly, but still, pretty weird/awesome. Also Orlando Bloom is likely to be in the films, which is news I can't decide whether I like or not - I have to say he pretty much ruled in the original trilogy, but he's done so little recently. At least he's hopefully not idiot enough to turn down this opportunity at a reprise of his most popular role, unlike his turning down the new Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which I still think is utterly barmy. Seriously, Orlando, what have you been in that anyone has heard of recently? Take the job and boost your signal so people know who you are again, and cast you again! IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, ORLI. IT'S BASIC MATHS OR WHATEVS. Ahem.

Today's rec is another of those rare, wonderful finds that you tend to trip over in the dark. They find you, not the other way around. Not only does this story expand on a hitherto untouched area of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, it does so almost entirely independently of the main storyline and with none of the characters really involved. The original characters are all so well-realised that you don't need Frodo or Aragorn or Legolas to carry it. It doesn't hurt that the prose is exquisite, either.

the rest is silence by Merrin. Extract: It’s the quiet he remembers most. The long hours spent looking off at distant Gondor, the silent beacon of Amon Din towering above him. “What do you think of?” Bremand asks him, and it’s the silence he thinks of most.
