tahariel: (Make something)

Winter is coming, the nights are drawing in and the blackberries are out in force… that means it’s time to start knitting again! Knitting is such a winter pastime for me, and I love having an enormous bag full of yarn to pick through and find the perfect one for a project. Of course it would help if I bought enough of any one yarn to do a whole project with…

Anyway, this winter I intend to learn to cable so I can make beautiful things like this hat. It’s supposed to be pretty tricky and time-consuming, but you get good things at the end of it, so.

Other awesome autumnal pursuits: today I picked two whole boxes full of blackberries to make jam and other preserves with, and I have a third box of rosehips with which I intend to make rosehip and crabapple jelly. I already made elderberry and damson jam as well as blackberry chutney this week (the latter not yet tasted, so God only knows if that turned out edible.) But I’m having a lot of fun being a hunter/gatherer/warrior nomad, producing my own preserves and knitting my own clothes. There’s something wonderful about making things that lets me feel wonderfully self-sufficient and accomplished.

I now declare this Bad Food Decisions Saturday, in the observance of which it is important only to eat truly terrible junk food and end up with a weird taste in your mouth from the unusual mix of E-numbers and artificial flavourings left over by a succession of increasingly unhealthy consumables.

Delicious blackberry and crabapple jam that I made myself out of fruit I picked myself from the Great Outdoors. I FEEL SO ACCOMPLISHED, LIKE A NOMAD LIVING OFF THE LAND

(Okay maybe I bought the sugar at Tesco)

BUT, BUT, I am planning to make elderberry and rosehip jam too, and maybe hawthorn berry stuff, since they are also edible! And maybe I will have to give away most of it since I don't eat a lot of jam. BUT I will have made it myself out of things I picked! (And sugar from Tesco.)

I AM A NOMADIC HUNTER/GATHERER WANDERING THE WILDS AND FEEDING MYSELF WITH THE FRUITS OF MY LABOURS

ALSO MY KITCHEN IS INCREDIBLY STICKY FROM THE JAM-MAKING, I AM NOT KIDDING, I KEEP FINDING JAM EVERYWHERE

Every time I start getting cocky and feeling very clever - oh, the cleverness of me! - I do something so utterly retarded and fall on my face. I like to think it's the universe keeping me humble.

I went blackberry picking today out along the canal by my flat and got a whole lunchbox full of lovely ripe blackberries for my pains (and pains there were, my friends, PAINS THERE WERE. I got prickled and impaled and stabbed all over the shop. A little bit stung by nettles, too. But BLACKBERRIES. And they're FREE.) There are loads of elderberry trees and rosehips and even a wild apple tree out along there too, and I'm seriously thinking about trying my hand at elderberry jelly or something, just for kicks.

But now that I have all these blackberries I had to figure out what to do with them. Pie is an obvious choice, but the last time I went out to dinner with my parents I had this wonderful venison in blackberry sauce that I really wanted to try and recreate. I didn't have any venison in (ha, like I ever have venison in!) so I went with roasted chicken instead.

I used this recipe here and I have to say it came out DELICIOUS. (Mine had lots more blackberries and sauce and purple than the picture.) I added a little bit of balsamic vinegar to the sauce which really seemed to work. I also roasted a whole load of potato, sweet potato, carrot, squash and courgette in oil and a little rosemary to go with it, which was totally yum too.

I still have most of my blackberries left though - anyone have any idea for what to do with them? I'm thinking puff pastry and cream, maybe a little nutmeg.

Could you guys help me out? I'm writing a sample movie review for that blogging job I'm trying out for but I could do with somebody else taking a look. It's short and below the cut! You know you want to, right? I've reviewed the movie Hanna, but don't worry if you haven't seen it I want your opinion anyway.

A friend of mine who lives in Manchester told me this story today:

“I have just left Manchester city centre … A lady with a number of Big Issue Magazines approached me with tears running down her face. She said “I don’t want you to buy one, could you just protect me? I am so frightened.”

I really hope these destructive bastards get what they deserve. There’s a petition calling for anyone convicted of rioting in London to be stripped of benefits on the epetitions website that’s got over 78000 signatures as of 5pm tonight. My name was on there two minutes after I heard about it.

A lot of people are talking about how this is just about criminality, and people feeling like they can steal things with nobody stopping them. I’m not going to disagree that that’s a huge part of this whole thing, and I'm not going to claim that this juvenile assholes are political or that they're 'protesting' anything, because they're not. But personally I think a lot of the why is this happening now is because the recession has been going on so long that we all feel weighed down by it, and that young people in this country have been told all their lives that they deserve to have a giant TV and to be famous for no reason and roll in money and have games consoles and luxury goods and not to have to work for it. And they don’t have that, because it’s ridiculous to expect that they should, but they do because that’s the way they’ve been programmed, and so they feel like they’ve been deprived of these things and so now they’re taking them because they feel like they’re owed and because of these riots they can.

We live in a culture where it’s never our own fault, it’s always somebody else’s, and it’s always somebody else’s responsibility to raise our kids to be polite or earn money or report a crime or build something good for our communities. I’m sure most of you have commented at some time or other how rude kids are these days, and how disrespectful, and selfish. And this is the result.

As ever, please feel free to disagree with me - I won't be offended! I love a good debate.

Everyone in London, please be safe and let us all know you’re okay. We didn’t let some assholes blowing us up stop us from being strong and caring about each other and working to make things better, and we shouldn’t let this stop us either.

If any of my London peeps need somewhere to stay for a few days until this shitstorm cools down, I have space and it's commutable if you need to get in during the day (40mins-1hr into Euston, from Milton Keynes, with super-regular trains.) Let me know - I've set the comments to screened for this post.

There are only 11 people with my name on Facebook, two of whom have double-barrelled names. Five of those I'm guessing live in the US based on their free census data online.

I feel very findable and exposed right now O-O I found two of my previous addresses without even trying on some of those people-finding sites. Does anyone know if there's a way to opt out of that kind of thing?
tahariel: (Do what I say!)
Every time I go to the hairdressers down south I tell them the same thing - that the biggest problem with my hair is volume. I have super-fine hair, and it has no body to it really - I have to use two different products to give it any bounce, which I happily do myself. So I say that I want them to blow-dry it as big as it will go (since most of that will fall out anyway) instead of flat to my head, and not to worry about it being sleek.

And EVERY DAMN TIME, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO ANYWAY. It's not like I'm not clear about what I want! WHY IS IT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND.

In Liverpool they always do my hair right but I don't live there any more TT-TT Only two hairdressers down here have actually done what I've asked them to. The cuts are always fine but I always, ALWAYS end up going home, re-wetting it and drying it again myself. NOT REALLY THE POINT.
tahariel: (Make something)
So last week I went to this awesome Film School day at Raindance Studios in London (they're totally awesome - Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan have both been students there) and it was super exciting and inspiring and helpful in terms of knowing where to start getting into the industry and what I want to do. I could write a whole post about this school! But instead I am going to whine like a little bitch because I decided to order a handheld camera because of this class to try making my own movies and I got this camera off eBay and it is rubbish TT-TT

The picture is all grainy and it tracks really badly and it's my own fault for going cheap but I expected a bit more for my money, honestly, so now I am sad. And also in possession of a really shitty camcorder. Which I will have to try to sell off again. SIGH. ARGH. WHY WORLD WHY.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

Me: I don't really feel you care about my bear-related angst Iona, I may have to think of terrible bear-related puns to text you but I'm not sure I could bear it
Me: Winnie you gonna text me back?
Me: Urso you say
Iona: You know, at this point I'm just waiting to see what you come up with next :-)
Me: Sorry. I know I can get a little grizzly at times.
Me: Come on, that one was pretty grrreat
Iona: That was on another level :-)
Me: I thought I was clawing for it a bit
Iona: Hahahaha nice
Me: A bit hairy perhaps? Maybe I should let this game hibernate.
Me: I'm not going to panda to your ego by demanding you text me back.
Iona: Hehehehehehe - these are getting better and better.
Me: So cool I'm polar.
Me: After this many bear puns you must think I'm Knuts
Me: I think I have a BooBoo.
Iona: That is my favourite so far.
Me: I'm just koala than you
Me: OH COME ON
Iona: How many more can you have?
Me: I'm just paddington it out now really
Iona: Hahahahahaha seriously
Me: But that was totally the worst one! A real kodiak moment
Iona: But you mentioned Paddington Bear. He's my favourite.
Me: Oh well, baloo for you.
Iona: Look for the bear necessities, the simple bear necessities, forget about your worry and your strife
Me: Hey, this is my game! No fozzie business
Iona: Damn, but you are good!
Me: It's all ready teddy go around here

Worst start to a morning today :(

  • Dark Tower movies/TV shows cancelled by the studio
  • Borders US is shutting down too, meaning B&N is essentially in control of deciding which books will be published due to having near exclusive yay or nay on buying
  • My DVD of Fassy getting groped by a bear, like, a lot (apparently he raises it and is it's Mommy but I am telling it like it is) was incorrectly in the DVD company's inventory and it won't arrive for this weekend when I wanted it. ( I did later find a dl but it was a struggle.)
  • My Coke can sprung a leak and sprayed me and I was late for work
  • FML. MY FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, LETME SHOW YOU THEM.

When I make a - fairly minor - observation (very minor spoiler for the Alphas pilot there) about the misuse of a medical term in a TV show on tumblr, I find it pretty aggravating that somebody I have never spoken to reblogs my post and tags it with "some people need to take a chill pill".

Considering that it's really pretty important that a word used in a medical context means the same thing to every medical practitioner, I'd say that "the same word can mean different things depending on who is using them" is not really appropriate in this case. And certainly using insulting tags when you know that the person will see your reblogged post and be able to see your tags? Not really okay, tumblr.

People are dumbasses. When you get a degree in visual science, then come and argue medical semantics with me.
