X-men Origins: Wolverine

It is so hot here, I think I might DIE. It is never not windy in Liverpool. Unless, of course, you are baking alive in your room and the window is restricted so you can only open it a little bit.
It was pretty good, I have to say - I enjoyed it, there were lots of awesome moments. However, I don't think it stands up to the earlier X-men movies, nor does it standalone the way they did. It didn't feel like a story complete in and of itself, that it could be the only one you watched and still be just as enjoyable. It felt much more like an addendum, or an appendix to the earlier films.
That said, I thought the way they covered the huge tract of time between his discovering his powers and his joining Stryker's secret team was well-summarised in what was effectively a montage scene under the opening credits, and that they did a great job at making it obvious which war he was in at any given time. As well, I liked the way they introduced the other team members by just having them do their thing as part of a mission, rather than going into it - it really worked. (I totally love Wade and his big mouth and his shiny swords of death, by the way. Just so you know. Agent Zero was also pretty cool, even if he was an asshole.)
Plus, of course, Wolverine's relationship with his girlfriend (I'm not sure how to write her name - Kayla?) was really sweet and well-developed without being overly sentimental and gushy. I really love it when a relationship is portrayed well. Also, she turned out to be super-awesome.
Scott being rescued by Wolverine as a teenager, and never knowing it because he never saw his face, and hating him in later life! That really tickled me, that's a cool little secret thing for us to know :D I want to read fic where he finds out, though. Nix on the part where Scott is dead as of X3.
I don't care what anyone says, Gambit was awesome in this. And I really liked Sabertooth - I thought Leib Schreider played it so well, really psycho-brotherly-affection. "Nobody kills you but me." Puts a whole new spin on the way he fought with Wolverine in X1, doesn't it?
On a more critical note, I do feel the CG was off at times in this film, with Wolverine's metal claws looking really pretty fake a lot of the time, and the fake!Patrick Stuart was just so off in the face. It looked like Patrick Stuart, sounded like Patrick Stuart, but was just enough like him to look creepy and not enough like him to fool me. I'm guessing they either couldn't pay or he refused and the studio owns the image rights to Professor X, or something. I wish they'd shelled out for five minutes of his time, anyway.
In general, I liked it, but not in the way where I come out of the cinema clamouring to go back in, the way I did with Star Trek. I'll still go see any more X-men movies they make, though.

Date: 2009-05-29 04:39 pm (UTC)Also, mmph, Star Trek, was epic awesomeness. I'm going to need some Kirk/Spock fic to get me through exams and my first port of call for recs, as usual, will be your delicious account!

Date: 2009-05-29 06:22 pm (UTC)It's cooled down here a little as the day's gone on, but I'd already planned out what to wear home so I could pack everything else and it's looking like that's going to have to change. I was gonna wear my knee-high boots to save them from damage and having to be packed, but I think I'd kill myself if I had to wear them! Plus the top I chose was WAY too warm for a heatwave.
Me and Hollie may be going to go see Star Trek again in the next couple of weeks if you'd like to come with?
