tahariel: (Iron Man - how to kill a king)
So last night me and [livejournal.com profile] inmemorybound went to see Daybreakers, the new vampire movie starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe. (Non-spoilery summary:) Ten years in the future, a viral outbreak has turned most of the world's population into vampires, and humans into an endangered species. The problem? Despite farming humans for blood (like an even more disturbing version of the pods from The Matrix), the supply of blood is running out. And as the vampires starve, they begin to degenerate and mutate...

Ethan Hawke's character Edward Dalton (hee, I know, a vampire called Edward! He's even a reluctant vampire) is a haematologist trying to create a blood substitute so that humans don't have to be hunted down any more. Then he is approached by one of the last groups of humans, who need his help.

I had really mixed feelings about this film when I came out, and not because it was bad - I think it just hit a weird chord in me that I couldn't quite place, not helped by something that happened in the last five minutes that was Not My Thing. It's not a relentless gorefest, which is great because I hate gory films. I've always been more interested in the story than the spurting. I think it was because it felt like a series of short-term objectives after each other, rather than one big cohesive story - though it all hung together well, their plans changed at each step, always moving onto the next thing.

As always, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe were awesome. And I didn't not-enjoy the movie. But I couldn't come out and happily say that I enjoyed it, either. Just felt quite mixed about this one.

On another note!

Ever wondered what would happen if Michael Westen was assigned as Tony Stark's bodyguard? Well, no, neither had I, but now I don't need to.

Spies > Superheroes (Or Not) by [livejournal.com profile] hackthis. Extract: Michael blinks; he really needs to get that other spotlight fixed. "Nick Fury, why do I feel like something bad is about to befall me?"
