I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die

Tonight I finished knitting my shawl, for those who are interested! It's maaaaaybe a little bit on the short side, but I can't afford to buy any more wool for it, so. Hopefully my step-mum will like it, anyway! I'm currently halfway through beading the other end of it, but I really have to go to bed now. However! Today's rec awaits!

[livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller's fic always impresses me with the sheer depth and subtle imagination of the writing, and this fic is no different. The delicacy of the worldbuilding - never using exposition, but building the information into the story framework so that we learn without realising it - is the great strength of this White Collar fic. 'Prison magic' - and as far as the story makes us aware, it is only in prison that magic comes - is made both dark and beautiful, and the way it tilts the familiar characters into new shapes while retaining their familiarity is a triumph of prose. Seriously, you won't be disappointed.

Never Leave A Trace by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller. Summary: Neal Caffrey can steal souls. Peter Burke has two shadows. Everything's normal...except when it isn't.

Hi guys! I'm in San Diego! I know, I know, what am I doing here on the internet? OH WELL. Today I went for a walk and ended up being out for seven hours shopping and wandering. I also got free movie tickets for buying DVDs, so I went to see The Last Airbender.

I am a huge fan of the original show. This was a trainwreck. )

A link: This is a warning from [livejournal.com profile] emigree to women using lj about a total creep who is targeting young women. You do need to read this.

[livejournal.com profile] krazykipper's post reminded me White Collar started again today and I totally forgot and I could have watched it on TV. Now I'm trying to download it but the internet here is sooooo slooooow. Not sure I'm gonna make it. DAMN.

I updated my story thing so it's got all the material up to where I am now, if anyone's interested?

Tomorrow I'm going to go to Balboa park and wander the museums :) And maybe find an internet cafe to see if I can get that White Collar episode.

Ended up being a linkage sort of post, and a signal boost

Firstly, gqmfkgfkkajkfskanlkasfskagh.

Secondly, though I know I will be burned with hellfire for saying it, the trailer for the US adaptation of Let the Right One In actually looks pretty awesome. I loved Chloe Moretz in Kick-Ass, so I was happily surprised to see her in this. Interesting how in the US version the hair colours are switched - the boy is dark-haired, and the girl is blonde :)

Thirdly, and less chirpily, WTF, fandom? It just seems like there are so many shitstorms being kicked up about all sorts of things at the moment, but I have to say that my opinion of fandom as a group is really being eroded with this sort of bullshit going on. Considering that I have always thought of fandom as being one of the most accepting, friendly, welcoming communities on the face of this big ol' ball of dirt, to find this kind of blind prejudice against people with disabilities really upsets me.

I can't lay claim to being perfect, but I just don't understand how people can do this kind of thing to other human beings. Wow, this makes more effort for me! Guess I won't pick up and move some chairs to make room for a wheelchair.

I pick up and move my clinic chair - or the chair of the patient's friend or relative sits in - more or less every week to allow patients or their family members to stay in their wheelchairs for examinations. It's not a small chair, and it's awkward. But it means that we can do the tests like everyone else and they can get treatment the same as everyone else. This doesn't bother me at all, it's just something that I do. Why does this have to be a problem? Would these same people exclude an elderly person who, likewise, needed assistance to get into and out of a chair? Of course not, because they've been trained to be respectful to their elders. Just not to people with disabilities.

Honestly, do they really think the interpreter - who has been paid to be there - is all that excited about stealing their content with their eyeballs? Oh no, they looked at the vid - which will soon be available for free on the internet anyway - without paying for it! Seriously, I am learning sign language this year, and you do not have time to take part in discussions yourself when you are interpreting at that kind of place.

I am obsessive compulsive. I know this is not a disability, but bear with me here. A couple of months ago I finally told my bosses this, to explain why I was having problems improving - because they made me so anxious that I got caught up in my own anxiety and got what I call 'looped' - unable to move past fear and worry. (I have since managed to derail this, BTW, for the most part. For the most part.) And even though this initially made things better, because they understood me better, it has since, I think, made them think of me differently, and even though they know it isn't usually a problem, they still look at the issue askance as though I am about to go mad.

And my OCD isn't even a visible, adjustment-requiring medical condition. I can't imagine being judged on sight like this.

Major fail. I'm disgusted with fandom all over again.

Q: What will you do, when the zombies attack? A: Preferably Chris Pine.

Today's rec is a White Collar story that somehow manages to incorporate random outbreaks of zombies casually into the character's worldview, without skipping a beat. Not only does it maintain the witty and endearing interplay between the characters, but it puts them into a slightly different position without feeling like it has done. Now that's skill.

The Zombie Story by [livejournal.com profile] giglet. Summary: In which Peter is a big damn action hero, Elizabeth pwns Brooklyn, and Neal ruins a set of very nice Italian shoes.

Catching up on a week of not posting

Bullet-pointy list for formatting goodness!

  • Things are finally FINALLY moving with the flat purchase. I've been approved for the mortgage (pending their receiving a piece of paperwork I sent yesterday), and they have authorised the appraisal/survey. Which means that, hopefully, I WILL ACTUALLY MOVE SOMETIME THIS YEAR.

All those who have heard me moaning about this never-ending saga can now breathe a tentative sigh of relief.

  • In fannish news, I am now up-to-date on: White Collar, Criminal Minds, Castle, and Glee. I would have been up-to-date with Supernatural, too, but I seem to be missing eps 505 and 506. Dammit. Of course, since all shows boot up for the second half of the season this month, I will soon be behind again. Eventually I will catch up with everything, I swear. As soon as I get the goddamned internet for reals.

  • I've been reading a lot this week (real books! Made from trees!) and I read this AMAZING YA book (and then the sequel) that you will all love and have to go read NOW NOW NOW. Look, you can even read a sample chapter for free!

It's called The Hunger Games, it's by Suzanne Collins, and it is pure genius. In a post-apocalyptic world, a teenage girl takes her little sister's place in the Hunger Games, reality TV with a difference... as punishment for their rebellion, the people of the twelve districts are forced to send twenty-four teenagers, twelve boys and twelve girls, into an arena where they are forced to kill each other for the amusement of the ruling class, until only one is left standing. Tense, dramatic, painful, and wonderful; I haven't stopped thinking about it since I read it, and I kind of want to get amnesia so I can read it for the first time all over again. The sequel is already available (and I've devoured that too,) and the third and final book of the trilogy comes out this Summer. I think I might die of anticipation.

  • And now for the accumulated daily recs: this week, with a theme of 'superpowered AUs'! (I swear I will post some non-slash soon, too, for variety.)

biconvex by [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit. Extract: Peter could feel a headache threatening to develop in the Caffrey Zone, which was located an inch above his temples, and had been a close acquaintance of throbbing pain during the last seven years. "But you're a shielder," he said, daring Neal to point out that he was stating the obvious. "And a bad one at that."
