She really, genuinely, never told her kids off for ANYTHING. Which is why Charlie was so upset when I told him 'no!', of course! But it drove me nuts, trying not to do anything when I really was thinking 'if you had smacked him just once before in his life, you could threaten him with a smack for the rest of his childhood and never have to actually do it, because then he'd mind you and behave!'
